Quality assurance of ethanol and biodiesel with high quality analysis instruments and expertise from Metrohm

In addition to a neutral CO2 balance, biogenic fuels are generally characterized by their very good microbiological degradability. However, with biofuels based on fatty acids there is an increased risk of polymerization at higher temperatures in the absence of antioxidants or in the presence of non-ferrous metals. A too high water content and the presence of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal ions as well as sulfate and chloride ions also have a negative effect on the fuel quality and can damage the fuel system of the vehicle. With the aim of avoiding these problems, the manufacturers of biofuels and motor vehicles have developed quality standards in which testing methods and quality parameters for biofuels are defined.

Let us recommend the right instruments for your application – we’ll install them, provide training and also assist you with follow-up application support if/when you need it.

ASTM- or EN-approved methods:

  • Rancimat for oxidative stability testing
  • Titrando titration systems
o Potentiometric titrators for acid value and free fatty acid determinations
o Karl Fischer titrators for water content analysis
  • Ion chromatography systems for sulphate and chloride analysis

Ion ChromatographyIon chromatography, also known as ion exchange chromatography, is a high-performance liquid chromatographic technique used for the separation and identification of ions or polar molecules in a sample, including proteins, nucleotides and amino acids. Equipment includes ion exchange columns, ion exclusion columns, ion chromatography systems, pumps, and detectors. Find the best ion chromatography equipment in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Environmental Monitoring and TestingEnvironmental monitoring and testing uses handheld portable analyzers, kits, spectrometers or chromatography systems for air, water, soil, food and other sample testing. Useful features of analyzers such as BOD and COD include portability, easy calibration, automation and sensitivity.  Environmental test kits for pH, water, moisture, etc, should be accurate, sensitive, reliable, fast and easy to use.TitrationTitration is an analytical technique for determining substance concentration in a solution. For titration consider a manual or automated system, volumetric or coulometric reagent addition and indication by a potentiometer, spectrometer, turbidometer or by the Karl Fischer method. Other features of titration to consider include burettes, reagents, concentration range, reaction time and autosamplers.
