Biochrom Ltd, a manufacturer of quality scientific instruments, and Gilson (Gilson International B.V/Gilson UK) , a leader in fluidics, purification and sample management, announced today an agreement to co-market and distribute in Europe products for automation of ELISAs and other absorbance assays. The partnership combines the strength of the EZ Read range of microplate readers from Biochrom, with Gilson’s innovative line of liquid handling systems. Used together the flexible offering enables scientists to easily automate their absorbance assays including ELISA, total protein and cell viability.

Biochrom created the EZ Read microplate reader range by matching its expertise in absorbance measurement with requests from scientists and technicians to make their experimental workflow easier and more effective. Gilson has incorporated its vast knowledge of liquid transfer techniques into a wide range of automated liquid handlers.

Tristana von Will, Global Product Marketing Manager at Biochrom, commented: “Gilson is a leader in liquid handling systems and we are delighted to be combining the heritage and expertise of both companies to co-sell our product ranges. Researchers and technicians will be very familiar with both the Biochrom and Gilson brands, but together we can further streamline experimental workflows for our customers.”

Ronan Herry, European Marketing Director at Gilson International BV, stated:” The Biochrom range of EZ Read Microplate readers fits very well with our range of liquid handling products, either for those customers who require manual or electronic multichannel pipettes from the PIPETMAN range or for those customers that would like to automate their lab work flows. The Gilson PIPETMAX comes at a size and price that is accessible to any lab and takes away the stress and strain of manual pipetting for ELISA and Bradford type assays while improving reproducibility. Adding the Biochrom range now enables Gilson to offer a complete applications solution for our customers”.

ELISAEnzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), also known as enzyme immunoassays (EIA), are used for the detection and quantification of proteins, peptides and antibodies in a sample. ELISA often comes in kit format, with pre-selected antibody pairs to detect specific proteins or biomarkers of diseases such as diabetes and obesity, or cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Detection is made possible with chemiluminescent, fluorescent or colorimetric substrates and detection instruments such as microplate / ELISA readers. Other kits available include: Enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assays for the quantification of protein-producing cells and chemiluminescent immunoassays (CLIA) kits. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput.
