Product news

Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc., a multinational manufacturer and distributor of life science research and clinical diagnostics products, today announced the launch of an Advisory Board for its KnowItAll® U product, a powerful combination of spectroscopy reference databases, tools, and technologies for academic research and teaching. The company also announced the launch of an Editorial Board for SpectraBase™, a community reference spectral database that is created, edited, and reviewed by members of the community themselves.

Members of the KnowItAll U Advisory Board who will provide ongoing product guidance to Bio-Rad include:

  • Grace Baysinger – Stanford University (continuing her earlier work with Bio-Rad on KnowItAll U)
  • Judith Currano – The University of Pennsylvania
  • Andrea Twiss-Brooks – The University of Chicago
  • Dr. Engelbert Zass – ETH Zurich

Members of the SpectraBase Editorial Board who will provide editorial direction for SpectraBase as well as product guidance on KnowItAll U include:

  • Dr. James de Haseth – The University of Georgia
  • Dr. Peter Griffiths – The University of Idaho
  • Dr. John L. Markley – The University of Wisconsin - Madison
  • Dr. István Pelczer – Princeton University
  • Dr. Daniel Raftery – Purdue University
  • Dr. Wolfgang Robien – The University of Vienna

"It is an honor to have such a renowned group of members on the KnowItAll U Advisory Board and SpectraBase Editorial Board," said Gregory M. Banik, Ph.D., General Manager of Bio-Rad's Informatics Division. "We are eager and excited about working closely with each of these members to further Bio Rad's commitment to outstanding educational resources and technologies."

KnowItAll U is a unique spectroscopy resource for research and teaching. Containing data for NMR, IR, UV-Vis, and Raman spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry, KnowItAll U is a collection of over 1.3 million spectra—the world's largest collection. In addition, KnowItAll U includes Bio-Rad's award-winning spectroscopy and cheminformatics software, the KnowItAll Informatics System and Bio-Rad's new platform-independent web browser spectral search interface, KnowItAll AnyWare™, that runs on Windows, Macintosh, and Linux computers.

The SpectraBase database is a community reference spectral database that is created, reviewed, and edited by members of the community themselves. Data deposited in SpectraBase is attributed to the institution submitting the data, and a record-based ratings capability adds a peer review capability to the entire database.

Infrared / IR SpectroscopyInfrared (IR) spectroscopy measures the interaction of infrared light with a sample, including transmission, reflectance & absorbance, facilitating the identification of analytes. Equipment used for quantitative analysis includes Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers, infrared cameras, FTIR gas analyzers, as well as attenuated total reflectance (ATR) accessories and pellet or film presses. It provides detailed information about the structure, composition, and properties of compounds and is widely used across fields such as environmental monitoring, materials science, drug discovery and development, food and beverage testing, and wider chemical research. Key MS techniques include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LS-MS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). Choosing from these wide range of techniques and technologies can be a daunting task, so keep up to date with scientific applications, performance expectations, and customer reviews here all in one place. Visit our product directory to receive quotes direct from the manufacturer. NMR and EPR SpectroscopyNuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is used to resolve the local chemical environment of atomic nuclei with spin, revealing information on molecular structure, dynamic processes and chemical reactions of organic molecules, from proteins to synthetics. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) also known as electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is used to detect and quantify paramagnetic species in a sample, including free radicals as transition metal ions. By immersing the sample in a strong magnetic field, both NMR and EPR spectrometers probe the sample with either radio waves or microwaves respectively. A range of benchtop, solid-state and time domain NMR spectrometers & EPR spectrometers are available, as well as NMR tubes, NMR solvents, software, coils, and magnets. Explore a range of Raman spectrometers, including handheld/portable Raman spectrometers for QC/QA labs and in situ spectrometers for processes. Conduct Raman imaging for microanalysis of mixed samples using a Raman microscope. Raman spectrographs are also available. The two major instrument classes are single-beam or double-beam spectrophotometers. More specialized equipment includes colorimeters, spectroradiometers and refractometers. Portable and microvolume spectrophotometers are also available. For the modular spectroscopy lab, explore a range of light sources for combination with a spectrograph/spectrometer and optics.
