The Omega Lum G from Aplegen is rapidly growing into the gel and western blot imaging documentation system of choice for many people.

Installations are growing across Europe as more and more researchers learn about the high performance and yet low cost for this very popular system.

As with all Aplegen systems it is powered by the intelligent SmartCapture Technology which simplifies imaging to the point where the user just has to pick an application and the image is automatically captured with the optimum exposure. This automatically controlled system even takes care of filter selection and focusing. Within seconds the user will have a high quality publication quality image at the click of a button.

For those looking for an all-round system then the Omega Lum G is the logical choice. It can be used for fluorescent gels and chemiluminescent blots. Additionally, the multiple excitation sources make it suitable for nucleotide and protein stains. The system is compatible with an extensive range of dyes including SYBR® Safe, SYBR family, Ethidium Bromide, Coomassie Blue, Silver Stain, AdvanStain Scarlet, SYPRO® Ruby, Oriole™ and more. With so many applications possible the Omega Lum G is the perfect solution for a busy multiple user laboratory.

At the heart of any good gel documentation system there is a CCD camera. The Omega Lum G has an incredible 6-million-pixel resolution camera which is cooled to an impressive -350C. This translates to a stunning, noise free image which is essential for high quality chemiluminescence imaging.

All Aplegen systems are noted for their clever design and compact footprint. Each system is robust and of a high quality. The small size means they sit perfectly on any laboratory bench. However, small footprint does not mean small sample size and the Omega Lum G can accommodate large format protein and nucleotide gels in its impressive 20.5 x 25cm imaging area. Lighting includes a dual wavelength transilluminator, white light conversion screen, EPI white and blue LED’s. The integrated Tablet with pre-installed software rounds off the complete, ready to use system.

Says Aplegen “for the user looking for an all-round system which combines high performance with a price tag which suits most budgets look no further than the Omega LumG gel documentation system”.

ElectrophoresisElectrophoresis equipment is used to separate mixtures of protein, DNA or RNA, based on their electric charge, size and other physical characteristics, by passing them through a medium such as a polyacrylamide gel, an agarose gel or a capillary tube. Electrophoresis equipment includes horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis chambers, isoelectric focusing systems, 2D electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis instruments. Precast gels with a gradient can be used or gels can be hand cast. Samples are run alongside ladders or markers to identify the approximate size of a molecule. Separated proteins and nucleic acids in the gel can be stained or probed with fluorescent markers and then imaged and detected using gel documentation instruments, transilluminators, densitometers and scanners. Western blotting equipment includes all apparatus necessary to transfer proteins from gel to membrane and subsequent processing steps. Protein transfer can be performed by electroblotting with wet, semi-dry and dry transfer systems onto nitrocellulose and PVDF membranes. Blocking, washing and labeling of membranes follows, involving buffers, blocking reagents, blotting / incubation trays, labeling reagents, immunoblotting assays, antibodies and conjugates. Automated equipment for these steps is available to accelerate your lab workflow. Finally, detection and imaging of proteins can be conducted using gel documentation and imaging systems. Explore a range of filter formats, including filter paper, plates and membranes for your separation needs. While larger particulates may be separated by gravity filtration, smaller particulates may require additional force for timely separation. Microfiltration equipment includes vacuum filters, as well as positive pressure, crossflow and centrifugal filtration devices.
