Exhibitor highlights from ESCMID’s annual congress in Amsterdam

The annual ECCMID Congress brings together infectious disease specialists from around the world

ECCMID The European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases is the annual meeting hosted by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).

On the 9th – 12th April, the 26th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) took place in Amsterdam, Netherlands. More than 11,000 delegates from 123 countries attended the congress, which featured more than 200 sessions, 11 keynote lectures, 20 educational workshops, 20 meet-the-expert sessions and over 100 symposia sessions.

Highlights from the Expo

This year, 157 exhibitors filled the exhibition hall, showcasing the latest diagnostic technology from around the world.

Randox Molecular

Randox Molecular was displaying its molecular products at the event, showcasing the STI Multiplex Array. The array is capable of detecting 10 bacterial, viral and protozoan infections including Chlamydia trachomatis, Herpes simplex and Trichomonas vaginalis. In addition, Randox displayed the Respiratory Multiplex Array, capable of simultaneously detecting 22 bacterial and viral pathogens.

Beckman Coulter Diagnostics

Beckman Coulter Diagnostics showcased the DxN VERIS System for automated molecular diagnostics. The system integrates nucleic acid extraction, reaction setup, real-time PCR amplification and detection. Beckman Coulter also held a symposium entitled “Innovation in MDx: Workflow Redesign and Assay Performance”.

John Sweeney, Senior Vice President of Molecular Diagnostics and CSO of Beckman Coulter Diagnostics explained: “The Symposium presentations reinforce recent independent performance studies undertaken at hospitals throughout Europe which confirmed that there is no lengthy system set-up – all consumables/reagents are refrigerated on-board and assays supplied in a unique, single cartridge system. Furthermore, one hospital study showed that technicians can be up and running on the system after just 20 minutes training.”


Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics

Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics showcased the VERSANT® kPCR Molecular System, a powerful automaton solution for a broad range of molecular tests. The platform offers an IVD test menu (including HIV-1, HBV, HCV CT/GC) and nine immunosuppression assays (such as Adenovirus and CMV). The new VERSANT®MiPLX Software Solution, for use with the molecular system, was also on display.

The VERSANT® kPCR Molecular System offers automated extraction of nucleic acids from a variety of sample types, as well as flexible sampling capabilities and easy-to-use automation.

Siemens also hosted an integrated symposium entitled “New Approaches in Immunocompromised Patient Testing”, which included talks on monitoring viral infections in transplant patients.

QIAGEN Bioinformatics

QIAGEN Bioinformatics also exhibited at the event, showcasing a workflow solution for microbial genomics, combining CLC Genomics Workbench, CLC Microbial Genomics Module and the MetaGeneMark plugin. QIAGEN also hosted a symposium with the title “Harnessing the power of PCR and IGRA to improve clinical insights in medical microbiology” in which speakers discussed a number of infectious diseases including Clostridium difficile and Tuberculosis.
