Calprotectin.co.uk is a new website that is dedicated to raising awareness amongst Clinicians and Laboratories about the value of testing for Calprotectin.

Faecal Calprotectin is a new biomarker which is helping to save money for the NHS by preventing unnecessary procedures on patients by screening out those with IBS who do not therefore require endoscopies.

The symptoms of functional disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and organic inflammatory intestinal disease (IBD) can be very similar in presentation but are two very different medical conditions. Historically, clinical gastroenterologists have had to use invasive endoscopy to differentially diagnose between these conditions. Not only is this stressful for the patient, it is costly for the NHS.

The NHS Centre for Evidence-based Purchasing has conducted several reviews on calprotectin testing and its use in differentiating IBS and IBD. These reports conclude that using calprotectin assays supports improvements in patient management as well as offering substantial cost savings.

Calprotectin.co.uk also introduces CALcheck Blue™, the latest product from the Buhlmann Calprotectin Test Family. It is a dipstick immunoassay designed for the qualitative determination of calprotectin in human stool samples. It is intended for screening for organic intestinal bowel diseases (IBD). CALcheck Blue™ comes in two different formats for the laboratory, Gastroenterology clinic and primary care environments.

POCT includes: blood glucose testing, blood gas and electrolytes analysis, rapid coagulation testing (PT / INR), rapid cardiac markers diagnostics, drugs of abuse screening, urine strips testing, pregnancy testing, fecal occult blood analysis, food pathogens screening, hemoglobin diagnostics, infectious disease testing and cholesterol screening.BiomarkersBiomarkers are biological markers which can be measured and evaluated to indicate a biological state. The use of biomarkers in research and diagnosis can indicate a normal or disease state or drug response of cells / tissues. Biomarkers include genetic markers, cell surface markers such as antigens, antibodies or receptors and secreted molecules such as cytokines. An assay system is required for identification of biomarkers. :Clinical ChemistryBiochemistry (or clinical chemistry) involves the analysis of bodily fluids using chemical tests. Techniques used include HPLC, chromatography, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, immunochemical, electrophoresis, turbidometric / spectrophotometric assay, MRI and ISE analysis. Tests are often carried out on plasma or serum but urine (urinalysis) and fecal specimens are also processed.Irritable Bowel SyndromeBiomarker DiscoveryClinical biomarkers refer to substances related to known medical conditions that can be accurately measured in vitro. Biomarkers can be used to diagnose presence of a disease and indicate disease severity. The discovery of new biomarkers is incredibly valuable in the field of diagnostics.
