Genevac has published an informative customer article that reviews the development of a new sample preparation method using its EZ-2 centrifugal evaporator to help simplify and accelerate the detection and quantitation of algal toxins in surface water.

Due to a warming global environment there has been a rise in occurrences of cyanobacteria blooms in lakes which can generate cyanotoxins. With surface water a major source of drinking water, the presence of cyano bacterial blooms pose a potential threat to human health.

Using Ultra-high Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) researchers have been able to improve the analytical method for determining cyanotoxins with improved analyte separation, sensitivity and increased speed of analysis. However, the commonly used solid-phase extraction (SPE) sample preparation technique for UPLC determination of cyanotoxins in surface water is very time consuming.

The article describes how direct solvent evaporation using a Genevac EZ-2 evaporator was evaluated and proven as an effective technique for reducing the lengthy sample preparation process and improving the efficiency of the UPLC analytical method. The article is titled ‘Detection and Quantification of Algal Toxins in Surface Water’ and can be downloaded from the company website.

UHPLC and HPLCHigh performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), also known as UPLC, are analytical techniques used to separate, identify and quantitate components of complex mixtures including biological samples such as proteins and lipids as well as chemical mixtures of pesticides, drugs and oils. Both techniques are liquid chromatographic methods but differ by operating pressures (HPLC < 6000 psi < UHPLC ). Components of HPLC and UHPLC systems include columns, detectors, pumps, autosamplers and column heaters. Explore a range of UHPLC and HPLC columns for your specific sample needs including reverse phase, normal phase, ion exchange, HILIC, ion exclusion and size exclusion columns. Multiple formats are available for conducting SPE, including prepacked SPE cartridges, disks and microplates, as well as SPE sorbent powders for manual packing. SPE systems can be used to automate the process and extract multiple samples at once. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) products are also available in the same formats. These systems include demineralization, reverse osmosis, filtration and ultrafiltration. A combination of methods is sometimes necessary to achieve purified water suitable for use in experiments.Water AnalysisAnalytical methods used to test the purity of drinking water include determining the level of contaminants abides to the level set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).Solid Phase Extraction (SPE)Solid phase extraction (SPE) is a sample preparation technique used to separate and concentrate analytes from complex mixtures. It is widely used in environmental, pharmaceutical, and clinical analysis. SPE provides higher sensitivity and selectivity compared to traditional liquid-liquid extraction methods, making it essential for accurate and reproducible results.
