1. Application Note: Thermo Scientific™ Ultra-Low Temperature TSX Series Freezers

Laboratories are reliant upon the capability of freezers to reach exceedingly low temperatures (down to -80°C), in order to reduce any biological activity or preserve structural integrity within a sample, while simultaneously ensuring that they remain viable once thawed. The Thermo Scientific TSX ULT freezer has been designed to ensure that your samples are always secure from temperature fluctuations thanks to the V-drive, its variable speed compressor capable of quickly recovering from door opening and other heat loads. 2. Article: Webinar Highlights: New Acquisition and Detection Modes with ZEISS Airyscan

In this webinar, Joseph Huff, Product Marketing Manager for Laser Scanning and Superresolution Microscopy for ZEISS Microscopy, discussed the use of use of Airyscan to increase performance of laser scanning microscopy systems on samples including cell spheroids, Drosophila brain and live cells. Read a summary of the Q&A session, or watch the webinar on-demand. Learn more about the ZEISS LSM family in our product directory.

3. Product: Beckman Coulter Diagnostics DxN VERIS Molecular Diagnostics System: Positive Trial Results Reported

Beckman Coulter has announced the results of recently commissioned independent trials of the new DxN VERIS Molecular Diagnostics System, which showed enhanced workflow and productivity over incumbent systems. A UK trial was undertaken within The Department of Virology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, whose annual automated workload is approximately 103,000 samples, testing for infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. 6. Article: New Infectious Disease Assay Could Improve Patient Management and Reduce Antibiotic Resistance

MeMed recently announced publication of the results of a large multicenter prospective clinical study that validates the ability of its ImmunoXpert™ in vitro diagnostic blood test to determine whether a patient has an acute bacterial or viral infection. Sonia Nicholas, SelectScience's Clinical Editor, spoke to MeMed co-founder Eran Eden to find out more. Read article.

7. Application Note: Maintaining Yeast Viability during Tissue Homogenization with Minilys

Fungi of medical interest in recent years have become primarily responsible for opportunist parasitic diseases, mainly because of the strong increase of immune-depressed patients. Fungal infections pose a challenge to health professionals, who not only face a variety of new emerging pathogens, but also manage the problem of resistance to antifungal treatments. In this application note, the viability of candida yeast pathogens post homogenization from whole tissues of mice (lung, heart, liver, brain, kidney and spleen) using the Minilys with Precellys lysing kits was assessed. 8. Product: FDA Signs Off on BioFire Diagnostics' Rapid Meningitis Test

BioMérieux's BioFire Diagnostics received FDA approval for its rapid meningitis and encephalitis test, which screens for 14 bacterial, viral and yeast pathogens that cause central nervous system (CNS) infections by using a small sample of spinal fluid, providing results in about an hour. Refrigerators Freezers and CryogenicsRefrigerators, Freezers & Cryogenics can be used for preservation or experimental purposes. Types of freezers include deep freeze, -80C°C, ultra-low temperature, explosion proof, cryogenic and controlled rate freezers. Freezing is also used in freeze-drying equipment for dehydration processes. Feature to consider in freezers include temperature control and recorders, failure alarms and self-closing mechanisms.Pipettes and DispensersPipettes and dispensers are essential lab equipment used to dispense measured volumes of liquid accurately. Explore a range of manual and electronic pipettes, including single and multichannel, serological and volumetric pipettes, as well as a range of pipette tips. Bottle-top dispensers are also available for simple and fast solvent dispensing. Find the best pipettes & dispensers in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Labware and Lab SuppliesLabware and lab supplies include various forms of glassware, plasticware, reagents and personal protective equipment (PPE) and are used across all scientific laboratories, enabling daily tasks to be performed. Explore a range of flasks and beakers, petri dishes, carboys and storage bottles. Labware such as condensers, desiccators and burettes are also available for more specific tasks. Find the best labware and lab supplies in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.CentrifugesCentrifuges are used to separate particulates suspended in a liquid via the application of a centrifugal force including cells, macromolecules, nanoparticles and precipitates. Centrifuges come in three sizes: microcentrifuges, benchtop and floor-standing centrifuges, depending on the volume and number of samples that require separation. When choosing a centrifuge, consider its maximum separation power indicated by its relative centrifugal force (RCF) value. Low force centrifuges reach a maximum RCF of 8,000 g, high-force centrifuges can reach maximum RCF values of 80,000 g. For extremely high forces, consider ultracentrifuges (up to 800,000 g). Refrigerated and vacuum centrifuges also known as concentrators are available for more specialized applications. A range of volumes are available for centrifuge tubes and microfuge tubes, depending on sample sizes. Find the best centrifuges in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Point-of-CarePoint-of-Care Testing (POCT) or Near Patient Testing (NPT) products are available for urine, blood and other clinical chemistry analyses. POCT includes: blood glucose testing, blood gas and electrolytes analysis, rapid coagulation testing (PT / INR), rapid cardiac markers diagnostics, drugs of abuse screening, urine strips testing, pregnancy testing, fecal occult blood analysis, food pathogens screening, hemoglobin diagnostics, infectious disease testing and cholesterol screening.Clinical ChemistryBiochemistry (or clinical chemistry) involves the analysis of bodily fluids using chemical tests. Techniques used include HPLC, chromatography, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, immunochemical, electrophoresis, turbidometric / spectrophotometric assay, MRI and ISE analysis. Tests are often carried out on plasma or serum but urine (urinalysis) and fecal specimens are also processed.Clinical MicrobiologyMicrobiology is the study of microorganisms including protists, prokaryotes, fungi, and, often, viruses. Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines. Estimate your culture’s density of microorganisms with colony counters, or screen and select colonies for desirable clones with automated colony pickers. Additionally, equipment is available to monitor environments for the presence of microbes and identify with microbial identification instruments. Find the best microbiology products in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Microbial DetectionMicrobial detection is crucial for identifying and quantifying bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms.
